Introduction To Teleconferencing Equipment

Teleconferencing equipment is one of the growing needs of today’s organizations. The modern age presents many challenges to a business or other organization.

It isn’t unusual to have key personnel who must provide input for decisions scattered all over the world.

Rather than dealing with an interminable delay while each sends thoughts back by some method to a decision maker, it is optimal for these to be brought together in a real time teleconference.

The resulting conference is a substitute for a face-to-face meeting, but is far more likely to be possible in a global environment.

While the simplest method is to have everyone at each node involved gather around a speakerphone, this has shortfalls in ensuring clear, unequivocal communications. The process has thus become more extensive.

Common Teleconference Equipment Configurations

Teleconferencing equipment will generally include a high speed data conduit of some sort to send audio and possibly video information, microphone and speakers, possibly a camera and monitor of some sort.

The older, and rarer, half duplex systems will only allow a single speaker at a time, but most systems can avoid the feedback problems this was designed to prevent and allow a more normal conversational flow.

It is also common to use desktop computer applications to control the process, especially to track the status of connections and signal flow between the nodes. At the upper end of the process, a great deal of specialized equipment can be used.

This can range from dedicated document display devices that hold documents with integral cameras to transmit them throughout the conference to microscope cameras to encryption devices to increase security of sensitive or proprietary data.

Teleconferencing Equipment Providers

There are many companies providing teleconference equipment, ranging from big companies like Sony and Ivci, through smaller companies that are more specialized, and companies that will attempt to set up and maintain conferencing equipment for those companies that find that buying and keeping the system operational is too expensive.

For those seeking to buy, teleconferencing equipment is often quite expensive, though, with some work and accepting some limitations, cheaper substitutes can be found for most.

The most important thing is to ensure the equipment has no hidden flaws that will prevent it from working on the desired site, such as failure to determine whether the office phones are digital or analogue, whether the manufacturer left information off of the documentation that would have changed your purchase options or even if the equipment can be adjusted to move between conference rooms of different sizes.

If at all possible, use a buy or purchase option that allows you to set up the gear where you intend to use it while retaining the rights to exchange anything that turns out to be incompatible.

For companies that are not large enough to simply create their own departments to maintain the gear, and do not desire to hire the service, it is always wise to research the warranty.
