Recommended Linux Video Conferencing Solutions

Before we can go into what Linux video conferencing is we need to discuss first what Linux is.

Linux is Unix-like operating system. So what does that mean?

Well to put it simply Linux is an operating systems that can be used on anything from Hand Held PDA’s to complex desktop and laptop systems.

Linux is a Freeware and Shareware software program. Linux is not only free but is extremely user friendly.

Linux video conferencing is using the Linux server to have a Live Video Conference between you and your client.

Some of the client features you may notice are a shared whiteboard which allows both users to draw on the same board or screen and see what each other is writing or drawing.

You need a phone connection, which uses computer to computer calling and allows you to talk and keep your hands free for other things. You also need a video link in which you use PC cameras to have an almost live conversation.

Benefits of Linux video conferencing can be seen in sale profits, customer satisfaction, and over all achievements of projects.

Another huge benefit to using Linux video conferences if the fact you do not have to install a new operating system to use it, and you can find fairly simple and easy to use software programs.

Why Linux? Well, to put it into dollars and cents, it is cheaper than Windows. Did I mention it’s free? You will also notice that it is more compatible than many other operating systems.

What are the requirements? The Linux system requirements are a Pentium 90 MHz, 16 MB of Ram, Connection of 128K ISDN and you might want to know that the System Demands 2-3% CPU or Central Processing Unit and 0.06k per second for each user Bandwidth. The Bandwidth is the total capacity of the connection wire.

Linux Video Conference Software

A very simple and user friendly program that enables video conferencing with Linux is TCPCam. It takes the video stream from a video4linux device, and the audio from the sound board using the OSS API, and uses a single TCP port in order to forward this data to a remote host (and the reverse).

The second major and extremely popular video conference software for Linux, MAC OS and PC users is of course Skype.

Skype uses very little bandwith, is very simple to set up and doesn't use a lot of system resources. It's free and highly recommended since it enables you to video conference with users who are not necesarily using Linux operating system.
